# Metrics Explorer

The **Metrics Explorer** enables you to perform _ad-hoc_ analysis of any ingested metric by charting the time series data for a selected range of time and dimension.

Let’s start by building a basic chart.

## Build a metric chart

By default, the Metrics Explorer plots the metric over the preceding 1-hour interval.

1. Navigate to the **Metrics Explorer** by clicking the **Metrics** tab, and selecting **Explorer**:

2. The **Metrics Explorer** form appears.

3. Next to the first query, marked by , click the text field to select a metric from the drop-down.

4. The chart of the metric over the time period appears.

5. You can explore the chart by hovering your cursor over any part of the data plot.
